Your Body: A Reference Point

It is difficult to discuss the habits of unnecessary contraction without the reference point of your body. After all, that is what we are constricting, but how? In Alexander terms, the body is made up of four separate parts. These are the back, head, legs, and arms. The back is the central part of the structure, and when I speak of it I am really talking about the entire torso, including the full length of the spine. In other words, the back extends from the base of the pelvis to the top of the spine, which connects to the head at about the level of the ears. In width, the back extends to the ends of the shoulders. This means that:

The neck is part of the back, not the head.
The shoulders are part of the back, not the arms.
The pelvis is part of the back, not the legs.

This understanding of the structure of the body, as you will see, is extremely important to understanding the Alexander Technique, breaking old habits, and using your body more effectively.
