Feel taller and more grounded by reaching to the ground with your feet the same way you reach to the sky with your hands.

You can feel lighter on your legs. Instead of thinking that you are piled on top of your legs, try thinking that your legs reach to the floor from your feet up. To do that, reach with your feet the same way you reach with your hands. You might feel taller, lighter, stronger, and more grounded. Stand up and see if it works for you.

Avoid taking your feet off the floor in order to put them on the floor.

When people want to feel more grounded, they often shuffle their feet or otherwise pick them up off the floor. Recognize instead that if your foot is on the floor supporting your weight, there is nothing more you have to do in order to connect it more firmly to the floor. It is already there. Similarly, to feel more grounded, avoid shifting in place.

I really mean that.  The clear relationship of your feet to the ground is a simple, but valuable, pleasure.  Don’t forsake it.

What that means:

  • Avoid looking for the ground with your feet or shuffling your feet to find it.  They are already there.
  • When bending, leave your feet fully on the ground as if you are standing.
  • Of course, you can come off your feet, but recognize that you give up what the ground/foot relationship has to offer when you do that.
  • When moving horizontally, remember that verticality generally takes precedence.
  • Most importantly, the more pleasure you take from the simple meeting of your foot to the ground, the more you will understand it and the more stability, power, flexibility, and overall sense of groundedness you will have.
