What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a 100-year-old method for helping you learn how to use your body properly. I use gentle hands-on guidance and verbal instruction to help you prevent movement patterns that wear you down by the end of the day or cause pain. There are no exercises, machines or special clothing. Instead, you apply the principles to your normal activities.  It takes from 5-30 lessons to learn the Alexander Technique and all lessons are either private or shared and are taken once or twice per week.

The theory behind the Alexander Technique is that people habitually and unnecessarily shorten and narrow their bodies. This habit degrades posture and makes movement more difficult. It also reduces the internal capacity of the torso, causing crowding for internal organs, and making breathing more difficult. As an Alexander teacher, I show you how to free yourself of these habits to gain a renewed feeling of ease and lightness so that you can look and feel better for the rest of your life.

“My back pain went away after 5 lessons. Now I take lessons not for maintenance, but to continue to improve awareness of my body’s movements.” - Stock Analyst, Age 24

I discovered the Alexander Technique in 1982 in a big group demonstration. At the start of the class, the Alexander teacher went around the room gently repositioning each person’s head. I could see that something changed each time he did this but when he came to me the experience was an epiphany. It was like being reintroduced to my body.

Like anyone, I thought I knew how to hold my head, walk, sit in a chair, and breathe. But what I didn’t know is that even a small improvement in how I “use” my body could make such a giant difference.  Of course, I have taken many Alexander lessons since then, but today, I still benefit from that first experience and I am sure that I look and feel better every moment of my life because of it.

I am passionate about the Alexander Technique and I am focused on getting my students where they want to be as quickly as possible.  I trained in Boston for three years with some of the best teachers in the world and I am certified by the American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT). I am also a certified personal trainer and I have a special certification in breathing coordination.  For five years I was the editor of the AmSAT News and I am a former board member of the American Center for the Alexander Technique.
